What, exactly, is a Geodesic Dome?

Spaceship_earthA geodesic dome is a sphere-like structure made up of a complex network of triangles. The triangles create a self-bracing framework that gives the structure remarkable strength. Geodesic domes are fractional parts of complete geodesic spheres: structures range from less than 5% to 100% – a full sphere. The term geodesic is from Latin, meaning earth dividing. A geodesic line is the shortest distance between any two points on a sphere.

Geodesic spheres and domes come in various frequencies. The frequency of a dome relates to the number of smaller triangles into which it is subdivided. A high frequency dome has more triangular components and is more smoothly curved and sphere-like. The concept of the geodesic dome originated with Buckminster Fuller and was patented in 1954.

Arguably the most well-known geodesic dome is Spaceship Earth, the AT&T Pavilion at Epcot in Disney World, Florida. Plastic and fibreglass domes used for sensitive radar equipment in Arctic regions and for weather stations around the world. Geodesic domes are also used for emergency shelter and mobile military housing.
